In the state of Massachusetts, routine car inspections are simply part of owning a vehicle. Our service experts at Mercedes-Benz of Burlington are looking at our frequently asked car inspection questions to help you make sure your vehicle is ready.

How Often Do I Need a Car Inspection?  

Any vehicle that is registered in the state in Massachusetts must have a yearly inspection completed. At the inspection, if your vehicle passes, you’ll receive an inspection sticker for your vehicle, which is good for one year. It expires on the final day of the month on your sticker. 

What if My Vehicle Fails?  

If your vehicle fails to meet state standards, you will receive a “reject” sticker. You’ll need to have the necessary repairs completed to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive.

Our service center is here to help if your vehicle is deemed unsafe. If you are caught driving without a valid inspection sticker, you could receive a traffic violation so it’s important to have your car repaired appropriately.

Do I Need an Emissions Test?

According to Massachusetts law, there are also vehicles that require an emissions test in addition to their safety inspection. Such vehicles include:

• Any vehicle less than 15 years old with an onboard diagnostic system
• Any medium or heavy-duty diesel vehicles dated 1984 or newer
